What Is Beta overlay?

A beta overlay is a position added to an existing portfolio to adjust its beta or market exposure without replacing its underlying investments. Equity-index futures or swaps are common instruments: a long overlay can add or restore benchmark exposure, while a short overlay can reduce it. For example, a portfolio with estimated equity beta of 0.4 might add an equity-index futures position sized to supply about 0.6 more beta and target an overall equity beta near 1.

In portable alpha, the overlay can replace the market exposure given up when capital is allocated to an alternative strategy. Its notional exposure may be large relative to the cash posted as collateral. Maintaining it requires margin liquidity, rebalancing, and attention to financing costs and tracking error; hidden beta in the underlying strategy can make the combined exposure exceed its target.
