About Bridged USDT
USDT.e is a bridged version of USDT on various L2 and alt-L1 chains. It represents USDT locked on Ethereum and bridged to another network via a canonical bridge. USDT.e is being replaced by native USDT deployments on more chains.
USDT.e is a bridged representation of Tether (USDT) on L2 and alt-L1 blockchains where Tether has not yet deployed a natively minted contract. The ".e" suffix (sometimes also written as "USDT.e" or displayed as "Bridged USDT") indicates the token was brought to the target chain via that chain's canonical bridge.
Mechanism
The bridging process works as follows:
- USDT on Ethereum is locked in the canonical bridge smart contract
- An equivalent amount of USDT.e is minted on the destination chain by the bridge
- To exit, the user burns USDT.e and the bridge releases the locked USDT on Ethereum
This means USDT.e is always backed 1:1 by real USDT held in the bridge contract — it inherits both Tether's USD reserves backing and the security model of the canonical bridge.
Deployment context
USDT.e has appeared on several chains including Avalanche (via Avalanche Bridge), Arbitrum (via Arbitrum Bridge before native USDT launched), Optimism, and others. As Tether expands its native deployments, USDT.e versions are gradually superseded by native USDT, and liquidity migrates over time.
Key properties
- Backed 1:1 by USDT locked on Ethereum in the canonical bridge
- Bridge risk: the security of USDT.e depends on the bridge contract in addition to Tether's reserves
- Being phased out on chains where Tether now issues native USDT directly
