BlackRock is a global asset manager and technology provider founded in 1988. Its first tokenised fund on a public blockchain, the BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL), launched on Ethereum in March 2024 with Securitize as transfer agent and tokenisation platform and Securitize Markets as placement agent. BlackRock also made a strategic investment in Securitize.
BUIDL invests all of its assets in cash, US Treasury bills and repurchase agreements. It seeks a stable value of USD 1 per token and pays daily accrued dividends as new tokens each month. The fund is a British Virgin Islands company offered privately under Rule 506(c) and Investment Company Act Section 3(c)(7), so investors must be qualified purchasers, and tokens can be transferred only to other pre-approved investors.
BlackRock Financial Management is the investment manager and BNY the fund administrator and custodian. New share classes followed in November 2024 on Aptos, Arbitrum, Avalanche, OP Mainnet and Polygon, and later on Solana and BNB Chain. BlackRock's official token address list also includes a second Ethereum token for the fund's I Class, BUIDL-I.
